ISO stands for International Organization for Standardization. ISO is an independent, non-governmental, international organization that develops standards to ensure the quality, safety, and efficiency of products, services, and systems.
The ISO 14064 standard is part of the ISO 14000 series of International Standards for environmental management. The ISO 14064 standard provides governments, businesses, regions and other organisations with a complementary set of tools for programs to quantify, monitor, report and verify greenhouse gas emissions.
A carbon footprint is the total amount of greenhouse gases (including carbon dioxide and methane) that are generated by our actions.
It stands for Greenhouse gases. They are compound gases that trap heat or longwave radiation in the atmosphere. Their presence in the atmosphere makes the Earth's surface warmer.
The ISO 14064 standards used by governments, businesses, and other organizations with an integrated set of tools for programs aimed at measuring, quantifying and reducing greenhouse gas emissions.
The difference between these two documents is that the GHG Protocol identifies, explains, and provides options for GHG inventory best practices, while ISO 14064 establishes minimum standards for compliance with these best practices.
Verification against ISO 14064 provides the necessary assurance of your carbon footprint declarations. Validation of GHG projects through ISO 14064 also provides confidence that the GHG project, if implemented as planned, will help achieve the projected emission reductions. Verification of your GHG projects gives assurance to your stakeholders of the quantum of emission reductions achieved in a specified period.
It includes requirements for the design, development, management, reporting and verification of an organization's GHG inventory.
Verification of GHG emissions demonstrates to external stakeholders that your footprint and GHG reductions are real, quantifiable, and credible. By presenting verified GHG emission reductions, your stakeholders will feel more confident in the data.
ISO 14064 is an important reference for conducting a GHG inventory for an organization. The standard can also assist governmental agencies or other program directors by providing a foundation for GHG reporting.
